Head of Downstream Business Development

PV Evolution Labs (PVEL) is seeking a full-time Head of Downstream Business Development to join our commercial team.  This position is based out of our flagship office and lab in Berkeley, CA, where we design and run groundbreaking photovoltaic (PV) testing programs.  It may require occasional travel to our Davis, CA and South San Francisco, CA solar test facilities.

Tasks May Include

  • Cultivating client and downstream partner relationships, writing proposals, and winning new business in the arena of technical due diligence of equipment suppliers, project level testing and testing at third party field sites, including but not limited to PV module testing in field
  • Coordinating with engineering and operations teams in proposal development to ensure proposals are of high quality and executable
  • Contributing to near-term and medium-term strategy in coordination with other leaders representing senior management, project management, operations, and engineering
  • Cultivating and maintaining excellent relationships with key subcontractors to facilitate successful winning of projects that involve capabilities outside of PVEL’s in-house functions
  • Developing and collaborating on department-specific strategic initiatives and business development plans to expand service offerings and market share
  • Collaborating with global partner labs and institutions to maximize business growth
  • Making strategic sales calls and presenting at key conference and road shows as needed to drive key business development opportunities
  • Actively using PVEL’s CRM to track leads, opportunities, proposals and other contracts, and interactions with clients to organize client communications share knowledge across key employees
  • Scheduling and facilitating sales review calls to track progress against goals, analyze win/loss statistics, and identify required actions in support of departmental revenue plans
  • Collaborating with others to provide guidance and assist with key proposal development (templates, content, structure, reviews)
  • Contributing to industry thought-leadership by authoring strategic marketing and business development materials and white papers
  • Other tasks assigned as appropriate

Position Qualifications

  • 4-year undergraduate degree or combination of undergraduate degree and relevant work experience, engineering degree preferred
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in the renewable energy industry including sales, project management, client account management and project sponsorship
  • Strong technical knowledge of the solar PV industry
  • Demonstrates strong leadership skills, an overall positive attitude and approachable
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Creative thinker and driven to innovate
  • Negotiating skills with a proven track record in closing deals
  • Understanding of clients’ needs and strong listening skills
  • Excellent command of Office series software, especially Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project
  • Experience with Salesforce preferred

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Travel to client offices, other company office locations, project site locations, and conferences around the globe
  • Occasional work outdoors in harsh conditions including but not limited to hot or cold environments
  • Traveling by car up to six hours
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed to meet deadlines and business needs
  • Valid driver license required and acceptable driving record meeting company requirements; ability to rent a vehicle in the U.S.

Director of Quality

PV Evolution Labs (PVEL) is seeking a full-time Director, Quality to join our engineering team.  This position is based out of our office in Berkeley, CA and may require travel to our Davis, CA or South San Francisco, CA solar test facilities.

About PVEL: PVEL is the leading reliability and performance testing lab for downstream solar project developers, financiers, and asset owners and operators around the world. With nearly ten years of experience and accumulated data, PVEL conducts testing that demonstrates solar technology bankability. Its trusted, independent reports replace assumptions about solar equipment performance with data-driven, quantifiable metrics that enable efficient solar project financing and development. The PVEL network connects all major PV and storage manufacturers with 300+ global downstream partners representing 30+ gigawatts of buying power. PVEL’s mission is to support the worldwide PV downstream buyer community by generating data that accelerates adoption of solar technology.  

General responsibilities:

  1. Maintain PVEL’s quality system & accreditations
  2. Develop, support & administer technician and operator training programs
  3. Continually monitor test result quality
  4. Develop & manage in-house calibration efforts
  5. Manage & develop HSE program
  6. Other duties as assigned

Job tasks:

  • Maintain PVEL’s quality system and accreditations
    • Update, revise, and maintain PVEL’s Quality Assurance Manual, Standard Operating Procedures, and other quality documents
    • Perform internal audits of PVEL’s facilities, including both technical and quality systems audits
    • Perform and document corrective action in internal software, including follow-up monitoring to gauge the effectiveness of the corrective action
    • Maintain ISO accreditation across all test facilities
  • Develop, support & administer technician/operator training program
    • Maintain equipment certifications and associated trainings for technicians and operators
    • Adherence to procedure and test result fidelity
    • Continually audit team member capabilities for compliance
  • Continually monitor test result quality
    • Review quality issues and oversee any necessary corrective actions
    • Continual spot checks on data fidelity at each test station
  • Manage HSE program
    • Monitor and report OSHA 300 Log
    • Manage SDS database
    • Work iteratively with management on safety accreditation & compliance
    • Ensure facilities adhere governmental compliance regulations
  • Develop & manage in-house calibration efforts
    • Working with Senior Staff Engineer, support the in-house calibration events
    • Support external calibration process
    • Maintain calibration record software

Required education, experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science required; Master’s degree a plus
  • At least 4 years of relevant quality management experience and physical and electrical testing, preferably in the solar industry
  • Comfortable leading projects from start to finish
  • High attention to detail
  • Comfortable with data processing, desk work, and hands-on lab work
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, JMP/Minitab, & Python

Abilities necessary to perform regular functions of the job:

  • Normal office and lab environments, occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs., regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, standing and reaching
  • Occasional air travel to other offices, and conferences (up to 15% annually, sometimes long distance)
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed to meet deadlines and business needs
  • Valid driver license required and acceptable driving record meeting company requirements; ability to rent a vehicle
  • Ability to work in the U.S.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with EHS management
  • Experience with AC power grid connected equipment such as inverters and transformers
  • Experience with DC power testing equipment & data acquisition
  • Familiarity with a host of standards including ISO 17025, UL 1741, IEEE 1547, IEC 61215, UL 1642, IEC 62133, UN 38.3, UL 1973, NFPA 70, UL9540, NFPA 855, FCC Part 15B, etc.
  • Basic understanding of PV, inverter, & battery design, operation and function
  • Experience with LabVIEW. MATLAB, VBA, R, CAN, and/or Modbus preferred
  • Open to learning, creating and expanding the capabilities of the lab
