Technical Project Manager

PV Evolution Labs (PVEL) is seeking a full-time Technical Project Manager to oversee execution of solar, energy storage, field testing and engineering projects from inception to completion. This position is integral to the successful tracking and completion of PVEL’s revenue generating projects.

This role requires a candidate who is a prized multi-tasker and communicator, and who has experience balancing fluctuating workloads and priorities. This person must also be willing and excited to contribute to a dynamic team of project managers, operations site leads and technicians, business development and sales professionals and engineers to execute on projects which can vary widely in complexity and duration across PV modules, inverters, energy storage systems and customer field site projects.

This position is based temporarily remotely until safe and practical to return to group work settings. Longer term, the person will rotate around PVEL’s Berkeley, Davis and South San Francisco, CA solar test facilities, as well as field test sites and customer sites in and out of the State of California as required.

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage project execution plan (PEP) for multiple solar, inverter, battery system testing and customer field site projects, which includes resource planning, scheduling, monitoring, overseeing the execution of the project, budget and revenue tracking, as well as customer communication.
  • Spearhead internal and external kick-off meetings, co-ordinate with internal execution team as well as subcontractors to develop project timelines based on the duration of each scope and calculated contingencies.
  • Work with operations, business development and engineering teams to estimate timelines and align those timelines with customer expectations.
  • Manage test flow cataloging.
  • Track project status and provide regular updates to internal stakeholders and externally to customers.
  • Engage with clients on technical questions related to their projects with support from PVEL’s Engineering and Operations groups as necessary.
  • Review engineering reports and changes relative to testing, performance & reliability metrics ensuring reports are appropriate, needed, qualified and well-vetted prior to their release to external customers.
  • Other duties assigned, as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or related experience required: Engineering, Science, Mathematics, etc.
  • At least 3 years’ experience with project or program management-related responsibilities required.
  • An energy industry background, or related field, with a solid knowledge of energy storage technologies and practices is strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of energy assessments and system performance project management and time management skills, including an ability to balance multiple projects under tight deadlines and to establish and maintain good relations with customers.
  • Ability to interact with diverse technical and non-technical groups, spanning all organizational levels.
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project etc.).
  • Willing and able to travel periodically to the Berkeley, Davis and South San Francisco, CA solar test facilities, as well as out of state test sites and customer sites in and out of the state of CA.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Travel to client offices, other company office locations, project site locations, and conferences around the globe.
  • Occasional work outdoors in harsh conditions including but not limited to hot or cold environments.
  • Traveling by car up to six hours.
  •  Ability to work extended hours as needed to meet deadlines and business needs.
  • Valid driver license required and acceptable driving record meeting company requirements; ability to rent a vehicle in the U.S.
  • Willingness and ability to lift 50lbs off-and-on for hours at a time, climb ladders, and work on roof tops in varying temperatures.

Test Engineer - Inverter/ESS

PV Evolution Labs (PVEL) is seeking a full-time Test Engineer to join our engineering team.  This position is based out of our office in South San Francisco, CA and may require travel to our other solar test facilities along with projects at client sites.

General Responsibilities

  • Support project work at PVEL’s Berkeley, South San Francisco, and Davis Test Sites
  • Support project work for PVEL’s Inverter & Energy Storage(ESS) business segments
  • Data analysis and reporting
  • Engineering Development support
  • Equipment maintenance, repair, cataloguing & calibration support
  • Work Instruction and Standard Operating Procedure drafting
  • Training of technical staff on procedures and processes
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Tasks

  • Support project work for PVEL’s Inverter/ESS business segment
    • Execute on build and experimental plans, with minimal guidance for client project work performed at test site such as inverter PQPs and batch testing.
    • Support DuT wiring and testing preparation
    • Manage and facilitate the repair of equipment issues or downtimes
    • Lead troubleshooting efforts on communication networks or data acquisition issues
    • Be the main communication interface for Engineering team to Operations team for site.
    • Support client visits or technical inquiries
    • Ad hoc site support
  • Data analysis and reporting
    • Support PVEL’s Technical Writing team with reporting and writing
    • Collaborate on the development analysis templates/scripts and report templates
    • Perform the analysis and report creation for bespoken project designs
  • Engineering Development support
    • Contribute to the design, implementation, and validation of Engineering Development Efforts.
  • Equipment maintenance, repair, & calibration
    • Provide primary support for equipment troubleshooting and Engineering-based maintenance event
    • Escalate and coordinate subcontractor support for repairs that are require it
    • Coordinate preventative maintenance events with subcontractors
    • Support Test Engineering Team calibration efforts

Abilities Necessary to Perform Regular Functions of the Job

  • Normal office and lab environments, lifting of up to 50 lbs., regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, standing and reaching
  • Travel for field work up to 25%.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
  • Ability to work extended hours as needed to meet deadlines and business needs
  • Valid driver license required and acceptable driving record meeting company requirements; ability to rent a vehicle
  • Ability to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AC power grid connected equipment such as inverters and transformers
  • Experience with DC power testing equipment & data acquisition
  • Familiarity with a host of standards including ISO 17025, UL 1741, IEEE 1547, IEC 61215, UL 1642, IEC 62133, UN 38.3, UL 1973, NFPA 70, UL9540, NFPA 855, FCC Part 15B, etc.
  • Basic understanding of PV, inverter, & battery design, operation and function
  • Experience with LabVIEW. MATLAB, VBA, R, CAN, and/or Modbus preferred
  • Open to learning, creating, and expanding the capabilities of the lab & field site

PV Field Test Technician

PVEL is seeking a full-time PV Field Test Technician to join our Testing Team, which is responsible for both performance characterizations and accelerated stress testing of renewable energy equipment. This position is responsible for carrying out test procedures, logging data and transporting test samples safely around the job site. While this position is based in Berkeley, CA, it is a heavy travel position and candidates need to be able to comfortably deploy to field solar installations for weeks at a time. They should have a passion for the solar industry, must be able to take direction well, follow-through on assigned tasks, remain calm in high stress environments while multi-tasking, be self-motivated, resourceful, and able to work without direct supervision.

Tasks May Include

  • Deployment to field installed solar power sites. (air and vehicle travel)
  • Operate independently with minimal supervision and direction (after training)
  • Install hardware, PV modules, inverters, and monitoring equipment
  • Follow standard operating procedures
  • Monitor tool operational status and ensure corrective actions are implemented to maximize uptime
  • Perform current and voltage testing using appropriate procedures and PPE
  • Under the guidance of the Operations Manager, maintain calibrations and calibration records of on-site reference devices
  • Organize and maintain inventory of frequently used supplies
  • Propose opportunities for preventive maintenance programs, repairs, spare parts, upgrades, or replacement of assets.
  • Other duties assigned, as needed.
